Thanksgiving Table Amore Style - Diner

Thanksgiving Table Amore Style

Deborah DiMare

Mangia Mangia…. Big tables, Big people, Big food equals great memories. There is nothing better than going home for Thanksgiving and spending the day around a table filled with loved ones and food. When I saw this picture that my high school friend posted, it brought back my childhood. I can recall the smell of my grandmother’s Italian version of stuffing. It was mixed with Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese. Delicious.

My grandmother lived in the Bronx in a beautiful old building. The family would gather in her tiny apt. The dining table would come out and take up the entire space. If one had to get up, either you crawled under the table to get to the other side, or an entire row of people had to move. It was wonderful. The food never stopped.

When I design custom dining tables for clients, I go as big as the space allows. A dining table is more than a piece of furniture. It brings people together under neutral ground. It creates an environment where stories can be shared, important topics can be discussed and strangers and new members of the family can be brought together. So, break out the cranberries, cut up the turkey or tofurkey and enjoy the holidays. This custom table is from Uhuru in Brooklyn.

We would like to wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving; that you may find many things to be thankful for this year.

Share your thanksgiving tradition with us. We’d love to hear from you!

Fall Decorating Idea #2: Pillows

One of the easiest ways to decorate for the fall is to simply switch or add pillows and throw blankets. Use warms colors that are more reflective of the fall. Colors include red, orange and rust and even deep jewel tones such as purple, royal blue and sangria. Bring in heavier, meatier pillows and throws, ones that you want to wrap yourself around in. Think of how good it feels to come inside on cold, windy, fall days and nuzzle up in a cozy throw and lie your head on a soft, weighted pillow. Now that’s soooooo good.

Here is a great article with other tips on how to decorate using pillows:

Fall Decorating Idea #2: Candles

Decorate your home with candles. Include the beautiful rainbow of fall theme colors for your candles; reds, oranges, brown, gold and white. Candles immediately add warmth and glow to any space, especially in the dead of winter. They’re one of the most inexpensive ways to transform a space and create an entirely different mood.

November Charity: Operation Gratitude

Deborah DiMare

Each month Ddigz.com donates a portion of your purchase to a different charity or organization.

Our mantra is “Interior Design with Direction. We all have special needs, especially when it comes to creating a comforting environment in which to live.”

Much thought is put into which organization to highlight each month. It’s a difficult choice and one we take to heart. This month we have chosen Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that sends care packages to deployed Military.

Their Mission:

Hundreds of thousands of American Service Members are deployed in hostile and remote regions of the world. The physical conditions they must endure are difficult and they may be separated from loved ones for long periods of time.

OPERATION GRATITUDE seeks to lift morale and put smiles on faces by sending care packages addressed to individual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed in harm’s way, to their children left behind, and to Wounded Warriors recovering in transition units.

OPERATION GRATITUDE care packages contain food, hygiene products, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation, all wrapped with good wishes of love and support.

The Ddigz team thanks you for helping us help others.

Fall Decorating Idea #1: Create your Own Center Pieces and Arrangements

A very simple and inexpensive way to decorate your home is to create your own center pieces and arrangements using glass votive candles and brightly-colored fall foliage or other fall materials such as acorns and dried berries.

Try wrapping glass votive holders in different textures and materials using a string or twine. Another option is to insert fall materials inside the glass containers such as Indian corn kernels, unshelled nut mixes or acorns. It’s so easy and takes minutes. You can also find things around the house that remind you of Fall and incorporate those items too. There are no rules, it all works and is so much fun.

Here are other ideas on how you can decorate and create your own arrangements using glass votive:

Things not to do in interior design

7 of the Biggest Decorating Mistakes

Deborah DiMare

If you could be Cinderella this Halloween and your Fairy Godmother waved her magic want to give your home a complete makeover, what would she change?

Since we can’t all be Cinderella, here are 7 of the biggest decorating mistakes you should avoid when decorating your home:

1. Bathroom cover rug / use rectangular rug instead. It’s the unwritten law of bathroom rugs. Rectangular is the way to go.

2. Undressed cables. Think of your undressed cables as a person. You wouldn’t want to be out in the wide open street undressed would you? If you disagree, you should be checking out a different blog. This one certainly isn’t going to do it for you.

3. Out of place themes (A home’s decor needs to be authentic and provide a sense of where you are. Decorating too much in the same print is overwhelming and tacky.) Remember, small doses, small doses.

4. View Askew – Furniture placed at odd angles in a room never feels right. Line up sofas, beds and other pieces parallel to walls—it will make the space feel finished and permanent rather than like a work in progress. We like symmetry. Our body is most comfortable with symmetry. So, don’t go all artsy and try to give the room a “look.” It will get the “look” by appearing symmetrical.

5. Popcorn ceiling!!! No get rid of it. The only popcorn in your life should be the one you eat at the movies.

6. Correct way of using patterns. Don’t overuse patterns or you’ll get yourself and your guests dizzy. Think simple. Keep it simple.

7. Curtains must fit your windows properly. Think of them as a pair of pants. You know that dorky guy you see with the pants up to his ankles?? That’s what your curtains look like when they’re too short. They look like a dorky curtain.

Share your Halloween decorating ideas with us! Send them to ddigz@dimaredesign.com and you can win a Ddigz.com room design for free (worth $479.00) We are not a Fairy Godmother but we can surely make your wish of re-decorating your space come true. The contest ends September 2nd. Make sure to write “Halloween Décor Contest” on subject line.
